Sewage Coming Up Through the Shower Drain: What to Do in the Next 30 Minutes

Sewage coming up through the shower drain is an emergency. Your main line is blocked and already full. Every litre you run has to go somewhere, and right now that somewhere is your bathroom floor.

Stop Using Water. Here Is Why

The line is full to floor level. There is no space left in it.

Anything you add now- a flush, a tap, a washing machine mid-cycle- comes straight back up through the shower.

What This Almost Always Means

The blockage is in the main line, downstream of every fixture in the house.

The shower is not blocked. It is the lowest opening indoors, so it is where the waste is coming out.

There is a second part to this, and most people have never heard it. Outside your house there is an overflow relief gully: a grated drain set lower than your lowest indoor fixture. Its whole job is to let sewage out into the yard before it comes up inside.

If waste is in your shower instead, that gully is probably blocked, buried, raised by later landscaping, or has a pot or paver sitting on it. Check it while you wait. If it is covered, uncover it.

The Next 30 Minutes, In Order

1. Tell everyone in the house to stop using water. Taps, toilets, showers, all of it.
2. Stop the dishwasher and washing machine. Both discharge fifteen litres or more in one burst.
3. Close the bathroom door. Keep children and pets out.
4. Find your overflow relief gully outside. Usually near the bathroom wall or the outside tap. Clear anything sitting on it.
5. Check with your neighbours. Thirty seconds. If they have the same problem, it is Sydney Water’s, not yours.
6. Photograph everything before you touch it. You will need it for insurance.
7. Call a licensed plumber. Not a cleaner. The mess cannot be dealt with until the line is cleared.

Do not pour drain cleaner into it. It cannot reach a main line blockage; it does nothing to roots, and it makes the pipe hazardous to open.

Is It a Health Hazard? What Not to Touch

Yes. Treat it as contaminated.

Sydney Water’s own advice is to stay clear of wastewater overflows, because direct contact with wastewater or contaminated surfaces can cause illness such as gastroenteritis. Children and pets need particular attention.

So: nobody in the room. No bare feet. No bare hands. If you must go in, wear rubber gloves and boots.

Do not start cleaning up yet. The line is still blocked, so it will happen again the moment anyone runs a tap, and you will be doing it twice. Wait until it is cleared.

Anything porous that has been soaked- bath mats, towels, carpet, underlay- may not be salvageable. Photograph it, then decide later.

Is It Yours or Sydney Water’s? The 60-Second Version

You are responsible for the wastewater pipes on your property up to where they connect to Sydney Water’s network.

Call Sydney Water on 13 20 90 first if: your neighbours have the same problem, the overflow is visible beyond your boundary, there is flooding in your area, or it keeps overflowing while nobody is using water.

It is yours if: your neighbours are fine, your drainage is not shared, there is no local flooding, and it only overflows when you use water.

One thing worth knowing: if a licensed plumber attends and finds the blockage is in Sydney Water’s pipes, you can claim your out-of-pocket costs back. Your plumber has to call Sydney Water and get a job number at the time for that to work.

What It Is Likely to Cost

What Caused It: The Five Usual Answers

• Tree roots at a pipe joint. The most common cause in Sydney, and close to standard in homes built before about 1970 on clay lines.
• A collapsed or sagging section. The pipe has moved. Clearing it will not fix the shape.
• Wet wipes. Sydney Water reports they cause roughly three-quarters of wastewater blockages. They do not break down.
• Years of fat and debris. Kitchen grease narrows the line from the wall inwards until something catches.
• A blocked overflow relief gully. The blockage was always going to happen. The gully is why it came up indoors instead of outside.

Whichever it is, get a camera down the line afterwards. A main line that reached this point has a cause, and clearing it without finding out means booking the same job again.
