Pipe relining cost in Sydney typically runs from a few thousand dollars for a short section to five figures for a full run. The per-metre rate sits between roughly $400 and $1,200 for standard 100mm residential sewer, and where your job lands inside that spread comes down to length, diameter, junctions, access and the condition of the host pipe.

What Relining Is, in One Paragraph
A felt or fibreglass tube is saturated with two-part epoxy resin, inserted into the existing pipe, inflated against the inside wall and left to cure for two to four hours. What you end up with is a continuous, jointless pipe inside the old one, rated to a 50-year service life under AS/NZS 3500. Branch connections are cut back open with a robotic cutter afterwards. It is a structural repair, not a patch, a coating or a chemical treatment. That is the whole of it, and everything below is about what it costs.
The Real Cost Drivers: Length, Diameter, Junctions, Access, Condition
Length. The obvious driver, and the only one you can estimate without a camera, which is why quotes given without one are unreliable.
Diameter. 100mm is standard residential. Larger bore takes more liner and more resin, and the price scales with it.
Junctions. Each branch connection has to be cut back open robotically after the liner cures, and each one is a separate operation with its own time and risk. A run with four junctions is a materially different job from a straight run of the same length. This is the single most common reason two quotes for “the same” job differ.
Access. Where the liner launches from and how far hose and equipment have to run. Pricing varies more by access than by suburb.
Condition of the host pipe. The liner bonds to the inside of the existing pipe, so it has to be sound enough to support the liner and clean enough to bond to. Heavy roots mean more pre-clean time, and some pipes cannot be lined at all.

Cost Per Metre, and Why That Number Misleads
Sydney per-metre rates for 100mm residential sewer run between about $400 and $1,200. Most North Shore, Inner West and Central Coast jobs land in the $550 to $750 range. Deeper eastern suburbs lines sit higher.
That is a threefold spread, and comparing quotes on the per-metre figure alone will mislead you almost every time.

A quote at $500 per metre with junctions, jetting and CCTV billed separately can finish higher than one at $700 per metre with everything included. Compare the total for the scope, never the rate.
When Relining Is Cheaper Than Excavation, and When It Is Not
Across the industry, relining commonly comes in at around half the total cost of dig-and-replace once reinstatement is counted, with 30% to 50% less the usual estimate.
Take a six metre section. Relining runs roughly $2,700 to $3,900. Digging and replacing the same six metres frequently runs $4,500 to $15,000 or more once you add excavation, pipe, backfill and putting back whatever was on top.
The word for doing the work there is reinstatement. Relining wins by avoiding it, which means it is not automatically cheaper. Where the pipe runs under open turf with nothing to put back, digging can genuinely compete, and any plumber who tells you otherwise is selling rather than advising.
And some pipes cannot be lined at all. Complete structural collapse, severely offset joints beyond roughly 45 degrees, missing sections, or a run laid to the wrong grade all mean excavation, because there is no sound host pipe for the liner to bond to. A camera run determines suitability before anything is committed. If your quote recommends relining without one, that is the thing to question.
What Sydney Conditions Do to an Excavation Quote
This is where the comparison stops being generic, because digging in Sydney is not the same as digging elsewhere.
Sandstone. Much of the North Shore, the Inner West and the eastern suburbs sit on it. Once an excavator hits rock, the job changes to saws and breakers and the hours multiply. The largest swing factor in a Sydney excavation quote, and very hard to predict from the surface.
Established gardens. The same mature trees that put roots in your sewer are the ones sitting over the trench. A sixty-year-old jacaranda or ficus is not a line item that can be reinstated at any price.
Driveways, paths and paving. Concrete and tile come up easily and go back expensively, and matching existing paving is often impossible.
Council reinstatement. Work extending into the verge or footpath brings council requirements and reinstatement standards of its own, which never appear on the initial dig estimate.
Reactive clays out west. Western Sydney soils move, which affects how the trench behaves and how the replacement line performs afterwards.
None of this makes excavation wrong. It makes it unpredictable, and unpredictability is what the no-dig premium is actually buying you.
How to Read a Relining Quote
A quote you cannot compare line by line is not protecting you. Six things should be on it:
- Metres to be lined, and from where to where. Stated as distances from a named access point, not “the back section”.
- Number of junctions, and whether reinstatement is included.
- Whether pre-clean jetting is in the price.
- Whether a closing CCTV pass is included, and whether you get the footage. Insist on both.
- The liner product and its certification. Look for CIPP tested to ASTM F1216 or ISO 11296-4.
- What happens if a section turns out to be unlinable? The answer should be that work stops, and you approve a separate quote.
One warning on timing. A full residential job of eight to twelve metres with a couple of junctions is normally a single day, but the liner still needs its two to four hours to cure. Be cautious of anyone promising a turnaround that does not leave room for it, because insufficient curing is a leading cause of premature liner failure.

Lifespan and Warranty: What to Ask For
A correctly specified and installed CIPP liner has a designed service life of 50 years or more. That is not a marketing figure: the technology has been in use in the UK since the late 1970s, and liners approaching fifty years of continuous service there still inspect well.
Service life depends on three things, all within the installer’s control: correct wall thickness, full curing, and a properly cleaned host pipe before the liner goes in.
Two different warranties exist, and they are not interchangeable.
- Product warranty from the liner manufacturer. Typically 25 to 50 years, tied to thickness, cure logs and service temperature. Ask for the datasheet.
- Workmanship warranty from the contractor who installed it. Usually 10 to 25 years on residential work.
A “50-year warranty” headline is almost always the product one. The workmanship warranty is the one that covers the part most likely to go wrong, which is a rough or incomplete junction reinstatement letting root hairs back in at the branch. Ask for both in writing.
One benefit worth knowing: a relined section seals every joint, so root clearing stops being a recurring job on that stretch. A camera check every ten to fifteen years is about the extent of the maintenance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I get a relining price over the phone?
Because length, diameter, junction count, access and pipe condition all move the number, and none of them can be established without putting a camera down the line. A phone figure is either padded for the worst case or it will change on site.
Can any pipe be relined?
Most can. Clay, concrete, cast iron, PVC and fibrous cement all take a liner, provided the host pipe holds enough structure to support it. Fully collapsed pipe, severely offset joints, missing sections and runs laid to the wrong grade cannot be lined and need excavation.
Is relining worth it if I keep clearing the same blockage?
Usually, the arithmetic is simple. If you are paying to clear the same line two or three times a year, relining the damaged section tends to work out cheaper within a few years, and you stop living with the backups in between.
Does relining reduce the pipe’s capacity?
Marginally in bore, but not in flow. The liner is smooth and jointless where the original clay was rough and jointed, so the finished pipe usually carries water as well as or better than the original did.
